Create a Professional Website Without a Programmer

All businesses should have a website in today’s market. It is much more affordable then the yellow pages and great advertising. The cost is much lower than ever.

Suppose you have a leaky pipe in your home? What is the first thing that you do? Personally, I type “Connecticut plumber” into Google and find a plumber in the results. Obviously I will only find plumbers who have websites. This is why you need a site for your business. Google is the new yellow pages.

Now you may be thinking that it will be costly and that you must hire a programmer to create a site. Not so.

You can create your own professional website. As a professional web developer I have changed my business model from creating sites for clients, to helping them to create sites that they can maintain on their own.

Using WordPress, a free content management system, it has become easy for the average person to create a professional looking website for their business. Initially, I thought that WordPress would put me out of business. Why would anyone hire me when they could just create their own site with WordPress?

Well it still felt like the right thing to do so I began learning and teaching WordPress to my clients.

This saves them money and saves me time. I no longer have to update their sites and be on call 24×7 for small text changes. So its a win win situation.

My clients have saved thousands of dollars by using WordPress as a content management system and I have saved so much time, allowing me to do other work.

How is this done?

The basic steps to creating your own website using WordPress are listed below:

  1. Buy a domain name
  2. Buy website hosting
  3. Install WordPress
  4. Install a premium theme
  5. Tweak the premium theme, adding a header / logo etc.
  6. Publish content on the site.
  7. Tweak WordPress for SEO, adding good titles and keywords to pages.
  8. Let the search engines know that you exist by submitting your site to search engines.
  9. Keep adding valuable content to site.
  10. Leave the site up and let it do the work for you.

That’s it. Although it may seem like a lot, once you have created one site using WordPress you will be amazed and how quick and easy it was to do. Going forward your site will do better in the search engines and be much easier and affordable to maintain. Good luck!

Becoming an Expert MS Access Database Programmer

Some people like to think that expert database programmers just sprout up out of the ground while the rest of us are left trying to fumble our way through the complexities of Visual Basic and Standard Query Language (SQL). But many of you may be shocked to find that these experts started out much like you and me. The difference? They found a way to go from confusion to understanding. I know that you are thinking to yourself, “Well that’s easy to say, but how can I become one of those individuals?” With a few tricks, some tinkering, and a little effort, you will be one step closer to reaching your goal.

The first thing to understand is that MS Access was created to be used by large companies and individuals. In other words, it can be as complex or as simple as the user desires. This allows the program to grow in complexity as your knowledge and skills increase.

The first step to becoming an Access expert is understanding that it WILL take some time to get comfortable with the program. That is why it is crucial to remain calm and not get frustrated. Learning becomes extremely difficult when we are frustrated or tense so let’s dismiss that from the picture immediately.

Once you are no longer frustrated, we can begin our lesson. One of the great things about MS Access is the help feature. Because Access was intended for individuals, the developers included an extensive help base with the software. To neglect making use of this feature would be unwise. The next great thing about MS Access is that it provides online help if you are unable to find what you are looking for in the included help file. This should be used after exhausting the included help feature.

If neither of these help features is working, I would suggest going to a popular search engine such as Google and typing a brief question about what you are trying to accomplish (e.g. “How to create MS Access queries in VB”). This has bailed me out of trouble many times when I was trying to do something very specific and could not find an answer in either help file mentioned above.

The next bit of advice that I can give you is this: don’t be afraid to tinker around. Most of my knowledge of database programming came from sitting in front of my computer screen during my free time. Trust me, it is time well spent. Not only will it help you solve your problem, but you will gain familiarity with the program and its features.

As a final piece of advice, I urge you to spend time every day “tinkering” with the program. Even if it is only for 10-15 minutes, the constant exposure will pay off in the long run. I find that going to the help feature and finding an article related to something I’m interested in learning how to do helps me immensely. With some practice and a little bit of time, you will undoubtedly become very efficient with your database programming.

SCJP/OCPJCP Certification and Java Programmer

Most people refer to core Java certification as SCJP, but now the name has been changed to OCPJCP after the acquisition of Sun by Oracle. If you are a Java programmer working for various employers as a full-time or part-time employee then you should consider the option of getting certified. The certification will add value to your resume and will attract the potential employers. By getting certified, you will add more knowledge about the Java language and will come to know the internal tactics which we ignore while working on a project. The preparation for the certification should take about 1 month.

Once you have decided to go for the Java certification, there are many resources which one can use to prepare for the exam. It is important to refer the latest resources because the pattern and the kind of questions are constantly reviewed and changed by Oracle. In addition to the various books that are available on the certification preparation, one can also go for the online resources like forums, portals and websites which provide a very good collection of mock exam questions.

After reading the book and going through all the topics, it is very important to appear for some mock exams. The mock exams are designed to give you a feeling of the real exam with similar kind of questions. It is estimated that your score in the real exam should be 10 % more or less than what you get in the mock exams. There are many exam resources available in the internet. In addition to the mock exams, one can also try the chapter wise questions given at the end of almost every book targeted for the Java certification exam.

After you have appeared and passed the exam, you can write the same in your resume with the logo of a OCPJCP that you receive from Oracle after passing the exam. The certification helps you in the fact that if there are more candidates with the same programming experience and knowledge about Java, you will be given more preference.
